QUENCHING THE DRAGON: A CENTURY OF FIRE SCIENCE AT NBS/NIST
Location: NIST, Gaithersburg, MD
Humankind's awe of fire predates civilization itself. Over the ensuing millions of years, the fires of concern, the combustibles, and the concepts of acceptable loss have evolved. However, the overarching societal striving for fire safety has persisted. For the last 105 years, the prime responsibility in the United States for the fire science to mitigate fire hazards has rested with the National Bureau of Standards, now the National Institute of Standards and Technology. This presentation reviews the history of fire and key roles played by NBS/NIST staff in reducing fire losses in the 20th and 21st centuries, concluding with a look to the challenges ahead.

February 14-20, 2010 - Activites by ASHRAE
NATIONAL ENGINEERS WEEK
The ASHRAE National Capital Chapter needs our help!
Eight volunteers are asked to go to schools in DC for a day and talk about engineering and their profession. These visits with the students are probably the most important events we can do all year! ASHRAE has arranged to have their volunteers work with at-risk kids who have no idea of their potential to change the world.
This event will be completely coordinated through ASHRAE. As such, please respond to Pete Collat at collat@summerconsultants.com if you are interested, and he will pass your name on to a DC school teacher who will have a place for you to go.
Don’t know what to say or do? Not a problem. We’ve got you covered! See the attachment! Change the script to fit your style.
If you choose to participate in this event, please take pictures and send them to our chapter secretary, Jennifer Frecker at jfrecker@koffel.com, for inclusion in the Chesapeake Chapter Pyrogram. And, most importantly, HAVE FUN!

March 8-10, 2010 - Activities by NIST
5th INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON PEDESTRIAN AND EVACUATION DYNAMICS
Location: NIST, Gaithersburg, MD
In many countries, an aging population, increasing obesity and more people with impairments are bringing new challenges to the management of routine and emergency people movement. These population challenges, coupled with the innovative designs being suggested for both the built environment and other commonly used structures (e.g., transportation systems) and the increasingly complex incident scenarios of fire, terrorism, and large-scale community disasters, provide even greater challenges to population management and safety. Key to effective management procedures is a better understanding of human performance in a variety of incident scenarios, tools that assess human performance in these scenarios, and the proper use of such tools. The Pedestrian and Evacuation Dynamics (PED) conference will address both pedestrian and evacuation dynamics and associated human behavior to provide answers for policy makers, designers, and emergency management to solve real world problems in this rapidly developing field.
To register for this event follow this link to the Conference website.

FM GLOBAL DATA SHEETS 2-0 AND 8-9
Location: TBD
In 2010 FM Global combined the sprinkler installation guidelines from Data Sheets 2-2 (Suppression Mode Sprinklers), 2-7 (Control Mode Specific Application Sprinklers) and 2-8N (Control Mode Density Area Sprinklers) into Data Sheet 2-0, Installation Guidelines for Automatic Sprinklers. Besides providing guidelines focused solely on the installation of automatic sprinkler systems, this new data sheet incorporated the new terminology of Storage, Non-Storage and Special Protection Sprinklers now being used by FM Global. Also in 2010, a new version of FM Global Data Sheet 8-9, Storage of Class 1, 2, 3, 4 and Plastic Commodities, was released. With the change in sprinkler terminology from Suppression Mode, Control Mode Specific Application (CMSA) and Control Mode Density Area (CMDA) sprinklers to Storage sprinklers, coupled with the combining of Class 3 protection options with Class 1 and 2 as well as combining Class 4 along with cartoned unexpanded plastics, the number of protection tables was able to be reduced from 42 down to 10. Flexibility and simplicity was further introduced with the elimination of storage height and aisle width as a design parameter. This seminar will discuss the major changes that were incorporated into Data Sheets 2-0 and 8-9, the reason for them, how to use the new version of Data Sheet 8-9 as well as potential additional future changes to both data sheets.

Recent Activity:
Our 2009 Holiday Happy Hour & Toy Drive was a huge success! We had tons of food, fun, and friends to kick off the holiday season with. Thanks to everyone who helped out to make our Wednesday, December 9, 2009 event such a blast! Check out pictures by clicking here.

The Tyco FireXchange Mobile Display Unit was at EBL Fire Engineering's office on November 18, 2009 as part of its national tour. Cliff Hartford with Tyco was on hand with staff to show off the hands-on, multi-spectrum, fire protection demonstration unit. Many Chesapeake Chapter members and friends participated along with the EBL team, MEP and Architectural firms, as well as the local AHJs.
The field trip to the WMATA facilty was great! Check out the attached page for a brief
synopsis of the event and pictures. Thanks to all who helped make this event a spectacular one and a special thanks to our speaker, Tom Jones with WMATA.
Our Annual Crab Feast and Picnic, held on Saturday, August 1, 2009, was a HUGE success. In fact, we had so many participants that we had to send for more crabs! Thanks to Brian Derr for coming through with an extra bushel and a peck at the last minute.
At the end of the extremely hot day, we had devoured more than 5 bushels of crabs, 40 hot dogs, 40 hamburgers, and an uncountable amount of snacks.
Special thanks go out to all those that helped with set up, clean up, pick up, and delivery. Also, thanks to all that participated in the volleyball tournament and those that just made the day fun for all!
Please mark your calendars for next August and plan to join us for the 2010 Crab Feast and Picnic.
