Distance Learning Courses
Start studying on-line!
The Society of Fire Protection Engineers now offers distance learning programs in a web-based format. This gives you the opportunity to work at your own pace. You can work at home, at the office, or at the fire station.
The SFPE distance learning programs give each participant the opportunity to learn the basic principles of fire protection engineering. Learn about sprinkler design, fire alarm design, human behavior in fire, structural fire protection and performance-based design.
These distance learning courses were developed in part with support from the U.S. Fire Administration Grants. These are unique educational products designed especially for the fire service, code officials, architects, fire investigators and other fire safety professionals who deal with protection of people and property from fire. Each participant who completes the entire course will receive Continuing Educational Units.

This seminar will provide code officials and fire prevention officers with guidance on how to evaluate the adequacy of a performance-based fire protection design. It will provide an introduction into the performance-based design process, and define the roles of major stakeholders that may be involved with a performance-based design. An overview of fire dynamics and the strategies used by engineers will be discussed. This seminar will also provide examples on how performance-based design is incorporated into the design of buildings. This seminar consists of 202 interactive lessons/screens.
The Society of Fire Protection Engineers will award 0.80 Continuing Education Units for completing the entire seminar. Registration fee is $99.00 per person.
This seminar provides fire service and fire prevention personnel with a basic level of understanding of fire alarm systems. The course describes the types of fire alarm systems and the basic components that make-up a code compliant fire alarm system. Basic installation instructions will be described along with important factors to be considered in the design and construction process. This seminar consists of 180 interactive lessons/screens.
The Society of Fire Protection Engineers will award 0.80 Continuing Education Units for completing the entire seminar. Registration fee is $99.00 per person.
This seminar identifies and reviews the key factors and considerations that impact the response and behavior of occupants evacuating a building during a fire. It describes how key occupant characteristics and cognitive functions affect how a person behaves during a fire. The seminar also describes how people interpret and respond to fire cues, factors that impact the movement of people during an evacuation, and how to estimate the time for people movement. Participants will also learn how to prepare for the evacuation of occupants with disabilities, different evacuation procedures, and some alternatives to evacuation. This seminar consists of 124 interactive lessons/screens.
The Society of Fire Protection Engineers will award 0.80 Continuing Education Units for completing the entire seminar. Registration fee is $99.00 per person.
Provides a basic understanding of how structural elements are protected from fire. Participants will learn about fire resistance and standard tests used to determine fire resistance of structural members. Students will explore the properties of steel, masonry, concrete and timber structural elements and how elevated temperatures affect these elements. Additionally, participants will learn the principal factors used to determine fire resistance. This seminar consists of 142 interactive lessons/screens.
The Society of Fire Protection Engineers will award 0.80 Continuing Education Units for completing the entire seminar. Registration fee is $99.00 per person.
This seminar provides fire service and fire prevention personnel with a basic level of understanding of fire sprinkler systems. The course describes the types of sprinklers systems and the basic components that make-up a code compliant sprinkler system. Basic installation instructions will be described along with important factors to be considered in the design and construction process. In addition, this seminar will discuss how to evaluate water supplies and hydraulic calculations for sprinkler systems. This seminar consists of 211 interactive lessons/screens.
The Society of Fire Protection Engineers will award 0.80 Continuing Education Units for completing the entire seminar. Registration fee is $99.00 per person.
The seminar provides a basic overview of the principles of fire protection engineering. The following topics are discussed: Combustion and Ignition Phenomenon, Fire Endurance Evaluation, Construction and Structural Features, Materials Application, Fire Protection Design Evaluation, Life Risk Analysis, Detection and Alarm Systems, Sprinkler System Developments, Design of Water Suppression Systems and Egress and Exits. This seminar consists of 836 interactive lessons/screens.
The Society of Fire Protection Engineers will award 3.20 Continuing Education Units for completing the entire seminar. Registration fee is $149.00 per person.
Each registration includes access for sixty (60) days to the course and supporting materials. You must complete the course and print the Continuing Education Units (CEUs) certificate within sixety days.
Note: At this time Continuing Education Units may not be accepted by the State of New York. SFPE is currently working on the application process to become an official provider for New York State.
