The Principles of Fire Protection Engineering seminar is open to all individuals interested in gaining or refreshing their basic to intermediate knowledge of the principles of fire protection engineering. This seminar is intended for individuals that have design, enforcement, or advisory responsibilities, fire protection engineers, architects, fire prevention personnel and others concerned with fire protection.
This seminar consists of 8 sessions over four days.

Life Safety in Buildings – Basic concepts on how buildings are protected from fire. Includes an examination of egress components, interior finish and floor coverings |

Human Behavior in Fire – Human tenability limits, occupant responses to cues, decision making by people in fire situations and evacuation times. |

Fire Endurance Evaluation – Perfromance of basic construction materials in the fire environment. Includes a review of the development and application of fire endurance testing for building assemblies. |

Smoke Management – Smoke movement forces, design principles for smoke management systems, and evaluation techniques. |

Water-based fire suppression systems – Characteristics of design and approval of various types of fire sprinkler and water mist systems with application implications. |

Fire Detection and Alarm Systems – Types of detectors and laboratory evaluation test procedures. Spacing of detectors. Alerting devices. |

Risk Assessment and Performance-Based Design – Includes an overview of fire risk assement and the performance-based design process. |
The course will be offered in three options: Four day option covers all 8 subjects; Session I is a two-day option covers subjects 1-4; and Session II is a two-day option covers subjects 5-8.

Session II: Thursday, October 16th and Friday, October 17th

The Society of Fire Protection Engineers will award 1.60 Continuing Education Units for attending either two day session and 3.20 Continuing Education Units for attending both.
