Smoke Control Session III:  CONTAM Analysis of Pressurization Systems

October 17, 2008

Instructor(s):  Dr. John H. Klote, P.E., FSFPE and Paul Turnbull

This seminar is inteded for fire protection engineers and mechanical engineers who design smoke control systems. This seminar is for both beginning and experienced engineers who need to be up to date with the advances in this technology. The seminar will also be of benefit to design project managers, manufacturers of equipment for air moving systems and code officials who need an understanding of this technology.

This one-day session focuses on CONTAM. CONTAM is a computer program uniquely suited for the analysis of zoned smoke control systems, stairwell pressurization systems, and elevator pressurization systems. Data input is addressed, including floor plan representation, zone properties, phantom zones, building leakage, airflow paths, air handling systems, supply points, return points, and weather data. Methods to speed up data input are addressed. Running simulations and data output are addressed. The use of CONTAM for tenability analysis is addressed. Participants will gain experience using CONTAM for a case study.

Participants should have taken Smoke Control Session I or be familiar with the material in Smoke Control Session I. Participants should bring (1) a laptop computer with CONTAM 2.4b installed and (2) The Smoke Control Seminar uses both the (a.) A Guide to Smoke Control in the 2006 IBC by D. Evans and J. Klote and (b.) the Principles of Smoke Management by J. Klote and J. Milke.  Attendees will only need to choice one of the two books, both available from the SFPE Bookstore.  For most engineers in the US, A Guide to Smoke Control in the 2006 IBC is the best choice, since it addresses both IBC code requirements and system design.  The Principles of Smoke Management is good for people practicing outside the US and those wanting additionall grounding in the fundamentals.  CONTAM can be downloaded for free from http://www.bfrl.nist.gov/IAQanalysis/CONTAM. The handout material for each session will include the course slides, case studies, and reference list.
